Concussion Prevention & Awareness Program

Seven Oaks School Division places a high priority on the health, safety and overall wellness of our students and recognize that children and adolescents are at a high risk of concussion – especially while participating in  sports.

Our extensive CONCUSSION AWARENESS PROGRAM will help coaches, parents, teachers and students recognize, manage and – most importantly – prevent injuries and long-lasting effects.

The SOSD proud to be part of a city-wide Concussion Prevention and Awareness program that includes a series of education components for students, parents, coaches and teachers and also increased on-site medical coverage at our high-risk sporting events (high school component).

WHAT IS A CONCUSSION?

A concussion is a brain injury that cannot be seen on routine x-rays, CT scans, or MRIs.  It affects the way a person may think and remember things, and can cause a variety of symptoms.

A concussion can occur even if there has been no loss of consciousness (in fact most concussions occur without a loss of consciousness).

A concussion is a brain injury that causes changes in how the brain functions, leading to symptoms that can be physical (e.g., headache, dizziness), cognitive (e.g., difficulty concentrating or remembering), emotional/behavioural (e.g., depression, irritability) and/or related to sleep (e.g., drowsiness, difficulty falling asleep).

WHAT CAUSES A CONCUSSION?

Any blow to the head, face or neck, or somewhere else on the body that causes a sudden jarring of the head may cause a concussion. Examples include getting body -checked in hockey or hitting one's head on the floor in gym class.

The Seven Oaks School Division has partnered with Madison Rigden Athletic Therapy for the implementation of the Divisional  Concussion Awareness Program.

As part of the program, Madison Rigden Athletic Therapy is currently providing a certified athletic therapist to each of our divisional high school football, hockey, soccer, rugby and lacrosse games.  (male and female).  These sports have been identified as the high contact sports where concussions are most prevalent.  Each athlete participating in those sports will have to complete a Pre-Season Athlete Medical Questionnaire & a Student Athlete Concussion Education / Awareness Online Module. Look for those links under your school specific menu below.

The goal of the partnership is ..

  1. Education
  2. Prevention
  3. Recovery
  4. Life longevity

These forms are mandatory as part of the Concussion Awareness Program and must be completed each school year. They must be completed prior to the athletes first "impact sport" season. i.e.: if a student runs cross country, plays football and lacrosse, they must complete the forms prior to the football season (their first "impact sport") and will only need edits of their Medical Questionnaire prior to their lacrosse season.
